Healthcare Professionals

The majority of our work is with occupational therapists and other health care professionals responsible for commissioning mobility equipment on behalf of clients. Here we provide answers to a range of common questions. However, it is always worth calling us on 01293 785185 if you have a particular client or situation in mind, because while brochures and web sites can detail the features and options for various lifts, more importantly we have experience of how they work in practice.

There is also our showroom which is available for health care professionals to view on their own or with clients, where we can demonstrate a variety of lifts in action. Our office is open from 9am to 5.30pm from Mondays to Fridays.

Why choose Ascendit?

The feedback we get from OTs is that they like:

Our independence - the number of manufacturers we deal with means we can suit a wide range of people, because each lift has different features and options, and we can be impartial in recommending the right model.

Our choice of lifts - so if a stairlift proves impractical, we can offer other options – a vertical lift, for instance.

The service we provide – our sales staff are not commission-based, so they are able to act in an advisory capacity and never pressurise the client to buy.

The fact that we manage the whole process including the use of regular sub-contractors for preparatory building and electrical work.

Is my client’s situation suitable?

The following information may answer initial queries over the suitability of one type of lift over another.

Minimum measurements for fitting a stairlift

The narrowest staircase on which we can fit a stairlift is approximately 690mm (26/27 inches). However, what is more important than the width of the stairs is the size of the person using the lift!

The user needs to sit on a normal chair and the measurement from the base of spine to the tip of their knee be taken. In the case of poor knee flexion the measurement taken should be to the tips of the toes. 100mm should then be added to this measurement (when considering a curved track stairlift add 140mm).

If the total is more than the width of the stairs then there will be a problem with fitting a lift. However, if it is less then it should be possible to fit a lift.

There are other options you can consider to help in a tight situation such as raising the seat height or using a lift with a soft back seat (both MediTek and Bison Bede offer this option). Give us a call if you wish to discuss the feasibility of an installation.

Weight capacity of stairlifts

Straight stairlifts – 25 stone / 160 Kilograms
Curved stairlifts – 18-19 stone / 114 - 120 Kilograms
(A limited number of lifts appropriate in certain situations only have a capacity of up to 28.4 stone) / 180 Kilograms

Weight capacity of ceiling hoists

38 stone / 241 Kilograms

Weight capacity of through floor lifts

35 stone / 222 Kilograms

CAD/CAM room layouts for vertical lifts, steplifts and ceiling track hoists

We can produce to-scale room layouts showing the positioning of vertical lifts and ceiling hoists where necessary. This can be of reassurance to clients and is useful in planning.

Car sizes of Wessex vertical through floor lifts

Type Wessex

SEATED 785 x 590mm
STANDARD WHEELCHAIR 1150 x 740mm
LARGE CAR WHEELCHAIR 1220 x 790mm

The Wessex through floor lift is the lift recommended and installed by Ascendit Lifts.

What if my client’s needs change?

If you decide your client needs a stairlift, but an on-site visit proves it’s not practical, we can offer an alternative such as a vertical lift without you having to begin the commissioning process all over again. We can also offer external access lifts and ceiling hoists if and when they become appropriate.

How will my client be treated?

Our staff are chosen for their ability to deal with people in vulnerable situations as well as for their technical and administrative skills. All have been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau. Clients are always treated courteously and when we are in their homes, we aim to cause the minimum disruption possible. As a quality registered company – ISO 9000 (2000) - we pride ourselves on our customer care and service.
